LEGENDS of Gangotri Dham:

  • Gangotri Dham is one of the 4 Dhams of Uttrakhand and millions believe this place for spiritual enlightenment and inspiration. Every year in the summer Chardham Yatra takes place and thousands of devotees visit this Dham which holds a special place in the hearts of those seeking spiritual solace.
  • In Hinduism, this river is considered a descent from heaven to Earth when King Bhagiratha resorted to severe penance to purify the souls of humanity. There are different beliefs and the theory that explain the significance of this place but everyone accepts this as the origin of Mother Ganga who purifies all the sins.
  • Another belief explains this says that Brahma collected the water used to wash Vishnu’s feet after Vishnu had freed the universe from a demon, and this water became Ganga, also epic Mahabharata has some mentions of this river which covers this place in historical significance.

What is the Location of Gangotri Dham?

Gangotri Dham is located in the town of Gangotri which is located at a height of 10,200 ft (3,100 metres) in the state of Uttarakhand. Like all other Chardham, this Dham is also in the magnificent Garwhal Himalayan which makes it hard to reach this temple.

The actual origin of the River Ganga is located 19 km away from the Gangotri Dham temple known as  Gaumukh in the Gangotri glacier. Not just location there are also weather and terrain challenges to reach this shrine.

How to Reach Badrinath Dham?

As we know that place is located near the glacier so there are no direct highways for the Dham. The nearby railway or airport connection is in Dehradun or Uttrakashi from there you have to travel on a steep road in the Garhwal region. The nearby major town is Rudrapryag where you can stay and prepare for the next travel.

From Uttarkashi, it takes 100 km more to reach the Gangotri Dham, the journey is filled with flower gardens, waterfalls, and deep valleys which makes this journey a one-of-a-lifetime experience.

Travel Challenges:

Travelling through the roads is a memorable experience but there are some restrictions in this medium of travel. Old-age persons can not be able to trek for 19 km to reach the Gaumukh also the terrain and the weather of that region can make this very difficult.
